EBTEC is a leader in Plasma Spray coatings for the Power Generation, Medical, Aerospace, Petrochemical and Defense Industries.

For over 20 years, EBTEC has been a leader in thermal spray coatings for the Power Generation, Medical, Aerospace, Defense, Turbine and the Industrial market segments.

Plasma spray is the most common thermal spray coating because of its versatility.

The EBTEC plasma spray coating process uses an electric arc as a heat source. The arc ionizes an inert gas to melt the coating material which is then propelled onto the substrate. Plasma spray is the most versatile surface treatment process. Depending on the applied material, plasma coatings can be applied to a specified thickness ranging from micrometers to approximately 1.2mm thick.

The velocity is lower in plasma spray coatings than in HVOF coatings but the heat is higher. The high temperatures of the plaza spray allow a wide variety of coating materials including metals, carbides and ceramics. Substrate temperatures can be generally be maintained at less than 300ºF avoiding damage, metallurgical changes and distortion to the substrate material.

Advantages of Plasma Spray Coatings:

  • The ability to spray a wide range of materials, like refractory metals and ceramics, including ZrO2, B4C and tungsten.
  • A broader powder particle size range can be used, typically 5-100µm, compared with HVOF spraying.
  • The ability to spray a wide range of materials, from metals to refractory ceramics coatings of refractory metals and ceramics, including ZrO2, B4C and tungsten.

  • Extreme wear resistance.
  • Economically applied to both small and large components.
  • Corrosion protection.
  • High temperature resistance.
  • Electrical resistivity & conductivity.
  • Cost-effectively repair worn components.

Disadvantages: Plasma is a line-of-sight process, similar to all other thermal spraying processes, making it difficult to coat internal surfaces and inside small holes.

Plasma Spray Coatings are Commonly Applied to:

  • Gas turbines
  • Jet engines
  • Printing rolls for laser engraving
  • Piston rings

  • Down hole tools
  • Salvage worn parts
  • Diesel engine piston rings
  • Carburetor parts
  • Solar panels
